In 2002, when the department was created, it was headed by INR Director, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Anatolyevich Matveev. The department included - Laboratory of Physics of Electroweak Interactions - Head, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Yu.G. Kudenko; - Laboratory of Elementary Particle Physics - Head, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor V.N. Bolotov (1933-2013); - laboratory for modeling physical processes - Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. N.V. Krasnikov (general management); - BAK group. From 2006 to 2016, the department included a laboratory of new methods for detecting neutrinos and elementary particles (headed by Ph.D. I.M. Zheleznykh (1936-2022).
The department is engaged in research in the field of high energy physics and neutrino physics. The main experiments with the participation of members of the department are carried out at the LHC and SPS accelerators at CERN, at the J-PARC proton accelerator in Japan and the U-70 accelerator in Protvino. Department employees are laureates of scientific awards: them. M.A. Markova (V.N. Bolotov, I.M. Zheleznykh, Yu.G. Kudenko) "For achievements in the field of fundamental physics" - 2016 (Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics) (Yu.G. Kudenko, N.V. Ershov, O.V. Mineev, M.M. Khabibullin, A.N. Khotsev, A.O. Izmailov, as part of the K2K and T2K collaborations) SMS collaboration (CERN) - 2010, for leading the team of the CERN APD (avalanche photodiode) laboratory (Yu.V. Musienko) SMS collaboration (CERN) - 2016, for research on the radiation resistance of electronics for the SMS hadronic calorimeter (D.A. Tlisov) Moscow Government for young scientists - 2019 (A.O. Department employees take an active part in the CMS, LHCb, NA64 experiments, and in the NP05, NP07 Neutrino Platform projects at CERN. A significant contribution was made to the creation of the long-baseline neutrino experiment T2K (Japan), to conducting the experiment and obtaining experimental results. Department employees participate in the development and creation of the HyperKamiokande detector (Japan). The department is working on studying kaon decays in the OKA (IFHEP, Protvino) and NA62 (CERN) experiments.
