The Department of Experimental Physics (DEP) was founded in 1976. From the moment the OEF was founded until 2011, it was led by an outstanding physicist - Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Mikhailovich Lobashev. The department, according to its original plan, was focused on experiments at the Meson Factory. Installations were created there and unique experiments were carried out, the main one of which was the famous experiment on the direct measurement of neutrino mass, which gave a record limit on this fundamental physical quantity. This record lasted twenty years, and the experimental design became classic.
It was used without changes in the new giant international installation KATRIN, on which virtually the same experiment was continued, with the active participation of the department’s employees. It was possible to make the most effective use of the applied capabilities of the launched Meson Factory: to create one of the world's largest installations for the production of radioisotopes and to open the production of medical drugs, competitive at the international level. Intensive scientific cooperation is underway: the department's laboratories have carried out complex experiments in many Russian (JINR in Dubna, IHEP in Protvino) and foreign (in particular, CERN, DESY, GSI, BNL, KEK) centers on three continents.
