Department of Theoretical Physics

Thanks to the influence of Academician A.N. Tavkhelidze, a strong theoretical school was formed at the institute. The ideas of A.N. Tavkhelidze formed the basis of the scientific program of the theoretical department created under his leadership. The department's employees include such world-famous scientists as V.A. Kuzmin, V.A. Matveev, V.A. Rubakov, I.I. Tkachev, V.A. Berezin, Yu.S. Vernov, N.V. Krasnikov, M.E. Shaposhnikov and their students. The work carried out by scientists from the theoretical department laid the foundation for a number of unique experiments conducted at the Institute.

Currently, the department employs about 30 researchers: 1 academician and 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 7 doctors of physical and mathematical sciences.

From the very beginning of its formation, the department conducted research in a wide range of areas of modern theoretical physics, including the theory of elementary particles, quantum field theory, theory of gravity, astrophysics and cosmology, physics of cosmic rays and neutrinos, and the theory of the atomic nucleus. The work of collaborators in these areas was in many cases pioneering and gave impetus to the development of new areas of research.

Employees of the department are laureates of various prestigious awards: USSR State Prize, Lenin Prize, State Prize of the Russian Federation, Lenin Komsomol Prize, Russian Presidential Prize for Young Scientists, Prize named after. Yu. Vessa, Lomonosov Prize, Prize named after. N.N. Bogolyubov, Demidov Prize, Hamburg Prize in Theoretical Physics, Prize named after. A.A. Friedman, prize named after. AND I. Pomeranchuk, MAIK Prize, Prize named after. M.A. Markova.
