When creating the multi-purpose research complex of the Moscow Meson Factory, opportunities were laid for the development of neutron research based on secondary neutron beams generated by accelerated protons in tungsten targets in cascade-evaporation nuclear processes (spallation neutrons).

The main ideas for the development of multi-purpose research complexes based on high-current hydrogen ion accelerators were implemented during the creation of a pulsed thermal neutron source IN-06 at the Moscow Meson Factory.

For neutron research, in 1975, a laboratory of pulsed neutron sources was organized as part of the meson factory department. The laboratory was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Yu.Ya. Stavissky.

As an independent scientific unit, the Laboratory of Neutron Research (LNR) was established in 1995 in order to prepare a program of priority experiments on beams of a neutron source and the irradiation device of the target-trap unit, the development of neutron research and applied work, on the basis of the laboratory of pulsed neutron sources. From 1998 to 2006, the laboratory was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A.D. Perekrestenko.

Currently, the neutron complex of the INR RAS includes the following installations:

Pulsed source of thermal neutrons IN-06 for research of condensed matter.

A pulsed source of epithermal neutrons with time-of-flight spectrometers based on the RADEKS installation for studying neutron-nuclear interactions, developing neutron methods for studying materials.

The physical launch of IN-06 and the modified RADEKS installation was carried out at the end of 1998.

High-intensity 100-ton neutron slowdown time spectrometer in lead SVZ-100 for studying neutron-nuclear interactions, launched in 2000.

Research areas:

  1. neutron physics,

  2. technology of intense neutron sources,

  3. condensed matter research,

  4. mathematical modeling of the interaction of particles with matter,

  5. radiation materials science.

Mathematical modeling of the process of interaction of hadrons and nuclei with matter, computer modeling, Monte Carlo method. A universal hadron transport code SHIELD has been developed, used in various fields of nuclear physics: for calculations of nuclear cascade processes in heavy targets under the action of an accelerator beam, ADS systems, in hadron therapy in oncology, when exposed to cosmic radiation on spacecraft and natural objects, for background conditions in underground low-background experiments, for modeling elements of the heavy ion accelerator beam transport path, optimizing pion-forming targets, modeling experimental physics detectors, primary radiation damage to materials under the action of an accelerator beam.
